Morningside College men’s and women’s swimming head coach Steve Mohs has announced the names of 13 high school recruits who will join the Mustangs for the 2010-11 season.
The recruits are:
Megan Akins of Lincoln, Neb. Akins is a senior at Lincoln Pius X High School and was a state qualifier in the 200-yard medley relay this past season.
Jenna Bowmaster of Lincoln, Neb. Bowmaster is a senior at Lincoln Northeast High School, where she swam the second leg for a 200-yard medley relay team that placed seventh at the state meet with a time of 1:54.30 this past season. She was also a state qualifier in the 100-yard breaststroke.
Bowmaster helped lead Lincoln Northeast to a 10th place finish in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:55.86 as a junior.
Andrew Burnham of Pleasant Valley, Iowa. Burnham is a senior at Pleasant Valley High School, where he was a district champion in the 100-yard breaststroke and is a school-record holder in the event. He placed 11th in the state meet in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:02.34 this past season. He also helped lead Pleasant Valley to 12th place finishes in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:41.40 and the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:30.24. He was a state qualifier in the 100-yard freestyle.
Burnham was a state qualifier in the 200-yard medley relay and the 100-yard breaststroke as a junior.
Jacob Chauss of Minnetonka, Minn. Chauss is a senior at Hopkins High School.
Stacy Luedtke of Lincoln, Neb. Luedtke is a senior at Lincoln Southwest High School, where she was a state qualifier in the 200-yard medley relay this past season.
Nick McBride of Fort Dodge, Iowa. McBride is a senior at Fort Dodge High School. As a junior he swam the second leg for a Fort Dodge 200-yard freestyle relay team that qualified for the state meet.
Cameron Pederson of Richfield, Minn. Pederson is a senior at Richfield High School, where he swam anchor to help lead the team to a ninth place finish in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:42.81 at this year’s state meet. He also swam the third leg for a Richfield 200-yard freestyle relay team that placed 12th with a time of 1:32.45 at the state meet.
Katie Sawin of Sioux City. Sawin is a senior at Sioux City Bishop Heelan Catholic High School. This past season she swam the third leg for a Sioux City Metro team that placed 15th in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:56.86 at the state meet. She was also a state qualifier in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
Sawin was a state qualifier in the 50-yard freestyle as a sophomore.
Amanda Scheideman of Wamego, Kan. Scheideman is a senior at Wamego High School, where she had the second fastest qualifying time for this year’s Class 5-1A state meet with a 1:11.37 in the 100-yard breaststroke. She was also a state qualifier in the 200-yard individual medley.
Scheideman, who swam for Manhattan High School earlier in her career, qualified for the Kansas state meet all four years of her high school career.
Kamalha Sonnichsen of Denison, Iowa. Sonnichsen is a senior at Denison-Schleswig High School who competed for Carroll High School. This past season she placed 15th at the state meet with a time of 1:03.42 in the 100-yard backstroke and swam the leadoff leg for a Carroll 200-yard medley relay team that placed 15th with a time of 1:56.86.
Sonnichsen was a state qualifier in the 400-yard freestyle relay as a junior. The best state meet finishes of her career came as a sophomore when she helped lead Carroll to a seventh place finish in the 200-yard medley relay and an 11th place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay. She was also a state qualifier in the 100-yard backstroke as a sophomore.
Ashleigh Starr of Avoca, Iowa. Starr is a senior at A-H-S-T High School.
Cortney Walls of Cannon Falls, Minn. Walls is a senior at Hastings Senior High School, where she earned all-conference honors as a junior and senior. Walls finished fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke at her Class AA Section meet this past season to miss qualifying for the state meet by 0.2 seconds. She finished third in the 100-yard breaststroke at the Class AA Section meet as a junior.
Patrick Whitsell of Council Bluffs, Iowa. Whitsell is a senior at Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln High School, where he is a school-record holder in the 100-yard butterfly and is part of school-record holding 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relay teams.
Whitsell was the 2009 Missouri River Activities Conference (MRAC) champion in the 100-yard butterfly and helped Abraham Lincoln win a MRAC title in the 400-yard freestyle relay. He was a state qualifier for this year’s state meet in the 100-yard butterfly and the 400-yard freestyle relay.
“This is a very strong recruiting class and I expect many of them to be major contributors as freshmen,” Mohs said. “I am extremely happy with the caliber of swimmers we have coming into the program.”

Krystal Carlson, a freshman from Richfield, Minn., and Kyle Eagen, a sophomore from Omaha, Neb., were named the Most Valuable Swimmers for the Morningside College women’s and men’s swim teams at the Mustangs’ post-season awards banquet on Saturday.
Carlson had the Mustangs’ top individual performance at this year’s NAIA Swimming & Diving National Championships when she placed 11th in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a school-record time of 18:17.64. Carlson also set school records this season with times of 2:00.99 in the 200-yard freestyle, 5:19.80 in the 500-yard freestyle, and 11:02.11 in the 1000-yard freestyle.
Eagen helped lead Morningside to 15th place finishes in the 200-yard freestyle and 400-yard medley relays at this year’s NAIA National Championships.
Other award winners were:
Most Improved – Amy Baer, a freshman from Malvern, Iowa, and Chuck Szitas, a freshman from Meadville, Penn.
Hardest Worker – Sydney Brisco, a sophomore from Scottsbluff, Neb., and Edward Funes, a freshman from El Paso, Texas.
Freshman of the Year – Cora Kugler, a freshman from Watertown, Minn., and Funes.
Outstanding Swimmer of the Year – Maggie Fast, a senior from Hastings, Neb., and Matt Mayfield, a sophomore from Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Mustang Coaches Award – Brisco and Terence Hancock, a junior from Malvern, Iowa.

Krystal Carlson, a freshman from Richfield, Minn., had the Mustangs’ top finish at the 2010 NAIA Swimming & Diving National Championships in St. Peters, Mo., with an 11th place finish in Saturday evening’s women’s 1650-yard freestyle.
Carlson broke her own school record in the event with a time of 18:17.64. She had set the previous Mustang standard of 18:21.50 earlier this season on Feb. 6 at the Minnesota Challenge.
Morningside’s Sydney Brisco, a sophomore from Scottsbluff, Neb., also competed in the women’s 1650-yard freestyle and finished 23rd with a time of 19:07.09.
Cora Kugler, a freshman from Watertown, Minn., made the finals in the women’s 200-yard breaststroke and finished 15th with a time of 2:30.47.
Morningside made the finals in the women’s 400-yard freestyle relay and finished 15th with a time of 3:53.65 from the quartet of Kugler, Carlson, Brisco, and Hanna Mortimer, a freshman from Rapid City, S.D.
Brisco finished 43rd in the women’s 100-yard freestyle with a time of 59.16 seconds and the Mustangs’ Kyle Eagen, a sophomore from Omaha, Neb., finished 47th in the men’s 100-yard freestyle prelims with a time of 51.19.
Morningside was 17th in the men’s 400-yard freestyle relay prelims with a time of 3:27.81 from the quartet of Eagen, Matt Mayfield, a sophomore from Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Ahmed Khorshid, a freshman from Miami Beach, Fla.; and Sean Roberts, a sophomore from Omaha.
Kugler broke her own school record in the women’s 100-yard breaststroke en route to a 12th place finish during Friday's action.
Kugler had a time of 1:08.33 in Friday evening’s finals to break her own Morningside record of 1:08.78 she set earlier in the day during the prelims.
Carlson also broke a school record during Friday morning’s prelims. Carlson had a time of 2:00.99 in the women’s 200-yard freestyle to break the Mustangs’ former record of 2:01.20 by Amanda Thompson in 2004. Carlson’s time ranked 25th overall and did not advance her to the finals.
Morningside placed in all four of Friday’s relays.
The Mustangs women’s 200-yard freestyle relay team of Kugler, Brisco, Amy Baer, a freshman from Malvern, Iowa; and Carlson finished 15th with a time of 1:46.09.
Maggie Fast, a senior from Hastings, Neb., Kugler, Carlson, and Brisco combined for a 16th place time of 4:30.40 in the women’s 400-yard medley relay.
Morningside finished 15th in the men’s 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:33.11 from Mayfield, Eagen, Roberts, and Khorshid.
The Mustangs’ men’s 400-yard medley relay team of Dustin Potter, a sophomore from Bedford, Iowa; Dan Place, a senior from Austin, Texas; Roberts, and Eagen finished 15th with a time of 4:08.78.
Roberts had the 34th fastest time of 57.10 seconds in the men’s 100-yard butterfly prelims. Mortimer had the 28th fastest time of 5:25.02 in the women’s 400-yard individual medley prelims.
The highlight of Thursday's action came when Kugler broke her own school record in the women’s 200-yard individual medley during the prelims.
Kugler had a time of 2:17.76 to break the Mustangs’ former record of 2:17.93 she set earlier this season. Kugler finished 24th in the prelims and did not advance to the finals.
The Mustangs’ best event on Thursday was the women’s 800-yard freestyle relay, where the quartet of Brisco, Kugler, Mortimer, and Carlson placed 15th with a time of 8:29.99.
Carlson and Brisco also competed in the women’s 500-yard freestyle, but did not advance past the prelims. Carlson finished 28th with a time of 5:24.41 and Brisco was 38th with a time of 5:30.67.
The Mustangs’ quartet of Edward Funes, a freshman from El Paso, Texas; Terence Hancock, a junior from Malvern, Iowa; Roberts, and Eagen competed in the men’s 200-yard medley relay and finished 17th in the prelims with a time of 1:50.14.
Fast, Mortimer, Kugler, and Baer finished 19th in the prelims of the women’s 200-yard medley relay with a time of 2:04.44.
Results
Sydney Brisco, a sophomore from Scottsbluff, Neb., has been named a 2010 Daktronics-NAIA Swimming Scholar-Athlete.
Brisco has a 3.90 cumulative grade point average (GPA) and is majoring in biology and history.
Brisco qualified for this year’s NAIA Swimming & Diving National Championships in the 100, 500, and 1650-yard freestyle events. She had the Mustangs’ top individual finish at last year’s NAIA National Championships with a 12th place finish in the women’s 1650-yard freestyle.
Student-athletes must be of at least junior academic status and have a minimum GPA of 3.50 in order to be eligible for Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors.
