Mustangs To Host Kansas Wesleyan In Home Opener
Mustangs Picked Third In GPAC Pre-Season Poll

Tom Maxon (Southern Maine ’88) is in his 11th season as Morningside’s head women’s soccer coach and in his 10th season as head coach of the college’s men’s team. He has compiled a 265-227-23 career record in the collegiate ranks, including a 98-94-8 record with the Morningside women and an 84-93-7 mark with the Morningside men. Maxon, the 2007 GPAC Women’s Soccer Coach of the Year, led the Mustang women to NAIA National Tournament appearances in 2006 and 2007. He was named the 2004 GPAC Men’s Soccer Coach of the Year after he led the Mustangs to a share of the league’s regular season championship. He previously coached at St. Mary of the Plains College and National American University.

Morningside opened the season with an 8-0 loss against William Jewell College last Sunday in Liberty, Mo., in a contest where the Mustangs
was outshot by an 18-5 margin.
Morningside posted a 12-7-1 record, finished third in the GPAC with a 9-3 league mark, and set a school record with a team defensive scoring average of 1.04 goals per game last season. . .William Jewell scored eight times against the Mustangs in last Sunday’s opener after Morningside had allowed only 21 goals all last season. . .The Mustangs will open their home schedule against a Kansas Wesleyan team that won last year’s KCAC tournament championship and captured KCAC regular season titles in 2007 and 2008. . .Rick Kievits, a senior midfielder from Nieuw Vennep, Netherlands, led the Mustangs in scoring last season with 12 goals and four assists for 28 points en route to first-team All-GPAC honors. Kievits ranks 10th in Morningside history with his 12 career goals. . .Daniel Whithorn, a junior goal keeper from Omaha, Neb., earned honorable mention All-GPAC honors last season when he had 75 saves, six shutouts, and set a school record with a goals against average of only 1.11 goals per game. Whithorn ranks third in Morningside history with six career shutouts and fourth with 129 career saves. . .Jeremy Lenz, a senior midfielder from Lincoln, Neb., and Chase Maier, a senior defender from Deadwood, S.D., each earned second-team All-GPAC laurels, while Travis Ward, a senior defender from Omaha, Neb., earned honorable mention All-GPAC honors, last year. . .Blake Fostvedt, a sophomore defender from Council Bluffs, Iowa, played in 12 contests for St. Ambrose University last season.
Morningside will travel to Sioux Center, Iowa, on Wednesday, Sept. 15, for a 5:15 p.m. contest against Dordt College in its GPAC opener.
Morningside was picked for a third place finish in the 2010 GPAC Men’s Soccer Coaches’ Pre-Season Poll.
The Mustangs posted a 12-7-1 record and finished third in the GPAC with a 9-3 league mark last season.
Morningside will open the 2010 season with a 3 p.m. contest against William Jewell College on Sunday, Aug. 29, in Liberty, Mo.
