Morningside’s men’s golf team will open its season at the Dordt College/Northwestern College Invitational to be held Friday and Saturday, Sept. 3 and 4, in Sioux Center and Orange City, Iowa.
The Mustangs are coming off a banner 2009-10 season that saw them make their first-ever appearance as a team at the NAIA Men’s Golf National Championships.
The Mustangs’ top returning player is Dave Young, a senior from Hinton, Iowa, who had a 79.1-stroke scoring average over the fall and spring seasons en route to All-GPAC laurels.
Austin Vanderhoff, a senior from Newell, Iowa, also returns from last year’s national tournament lineup. Vanderhoff had an 82.1-stroke scoring average last year.
The Mustangs return nine other players who had tournament experience last season in Jeremiah Curry, a sophomore from Elk Point, S.D.; Nick Hessa, a sophomore from Sioux City; Jarret Heubrock, a sophomore from Aurelia, Iowa; Greg Kolpin, a junior from Aurelia; Seth McCauley, a sophomore from Lawrence, Kan.; Torin Otis, a sophomore from Omaha, Neb.; Jarrod Reese, a sophomore from Curlew, Iowa; Sean Richardson, a sophomore from Lawton, Iowa; and Kevin Zoz, a junior from Murdock, Neb.
Morningside’s freshmen class includes three players who were top 10 finishers at their state tournaments as seniors. Tyler Hunt of Cascade, Colo., was the Tri Peaks League individual medalist and finished fourth in the individual standings at the Class 3A state tournament for Manitou Springs High School. Andrew King of Treynor, Iowa, finished fifth at the Class 1A state tourney for Treynor Community High School. Alex Vanderhoff of Newell, Iowa, finished 10th at the Class 1A state tournament for Newell-Fonda High School. Vanderhoff earned Iowa High School Golf Coaches Association (IHSGCA) second-team Class 1A all-state honors, while Matt Pitts, a freshman from Cherokee, Iowa, who prepped at Cherokee Washington High School, was a IHSGCA second-team Class 2A all-state selection. Jeremy Gardner, a freshman from Chadron, Neb., was a first-team All-Western Conference performer at Chadron High School, and Sean Manley, a freshman from South Sioux City, Neb., was the No. 1 player for the past two seasons at South Sioux City High School.
