Todd Sapp is the new men’s and women’s head golf coach at Morningside College announced Mustang athletic director Jerry Schmutte.
Sapp replaces former Morningside head coach Kelly Schmidt, who resigned earlier this summer.
Sapp has enjoyed an impressive amateur career with over 50 tournament championships on his resume. Sapp is a five-time Jividen Cup champion as well as a four-time Nebraska Great Plains champion and a three-time Rivercade and Nebraska Governor Cup champion. He is also a past Iowa Lake Creek Amateur winner and has been the city champion in Sioux City and Lincoln, Neb.
“I am very pleased to have Todd Sapp join our athletic department as our new head golf coach,” Schmutte said. “He is well known in the Siouxland golf circles because of his outstanding amateur career and his name recognition should be a major asset for our program when it comes to recruiting.”
Sapp, who works as a golf course designer, designed and constructed Whispering Creek Golf Course in Sioux City. Whispering Creek hosted the 2006 Iowa State Amateur and was named the Iowa Golf Association’s 2007 18-Hole Course of the Year.
“I’m very excited and fired up about the opportunity to coach golf at Morningside,” Sapp said. “I hope to build on the success that coach Schmidt brought to the program as we go forward.”
Sapp will be assisted by Mike “ML” Petersen, a 1985 Morningside graduate who also served as an assistant coach under Schmidt.
“Petersen has been a valuable asset to the program and I look forward to working with him at Morningside,” Sapp said.
Sapp is a 1983 graduate of the University of Nebraska, where he played for the Cornhuskers’ golf team. He graduated from Sioux City North High School in 1979.
